How does poor sleep impact you?

Sleep has an impact on almost every area of health. According to experts, "depression and sleep problems are closely linked" (John Hopkins Medicine para 1), and like the chicken and the egg dilemma, their cause and effects are cyclical; fix one aspect of the rotation and the other side will likely improve.

Rest additionally allows a person to feel sharp and present. It fights disease and sickness, it helps prevent and ameliorate mental disorders such as depression, ADHD, and schizophrenia, and it makes the body more efficient and responsive. These benefits allow college students to be more productive and successful in academics, enjoy social environments and relationships more, and feel more happy and motivated. Having the extensive impact that it does, sleep is an incredibly relevant issue in this society.

“Researchers found that individuals who slept fewer than five hours per night were twice as likely to develop dementia, and twice as likely to die, compared to those who slept six to eight hours per night” (Budson para 1)

Effects of bad sleep:

  • Loss of enjoyment in social activities

  • Poor academic performance

  • Brain fog/ feeling out of it

  • Increased risk of ADHD/ depression/ other mental illnesses

  • Increased isolation

  • Headaches

  • Increased anxiety

  • decreased state of happiness

  • Lethargy

Effects of good sleep:

  • Increased energy

  • More engaging social life

  • clear head

  • Physical wellness

  • Increased state of happiness

  • Increased motivation

  • Better academic performance

Good sleep is also known to greatly diminish the chances that a person will develop diseases like dementia.
